2010 union butterfield dies are made from carbon steel, which is a tough tool steel for use by hand in difficult conditions when the die is held in a suitable die stock (see 1301 and 8007). The split die design means it can be adjusted in the die stock to achieve the required fit or tolerance, whilst the bright finish prevents workpiece material from sticking to the cutting edges of the tool so you get more accurate threads. 2010 dies can be used to create external threads in many materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum.
